Who Shall Keep Us From the Love of God

Who Shall Keep Us From the Love of God

I grew up playing tuba in school. Our high school band played “The Planets” by Gustav Holst. In the middle of “Jupiter” is a magnificent hymn that later came to be known as “Thaxted,” named after the town where he lived most of his life. Thaxted is a majestic hymn that I’ve loved for many years. I’ve just never found lyrics as noble to match the grandeur of the hymn. However, one day while I was reading Romans 8, a couple of the verses fit the tune; I had finally found a scripture with splendor to match the hymn.

Lyrics

Who shall keep us from the love of God? What shall keep us from His love?
Neither death, nor life, nor height, nor depth can keep us from His love.
Shall distress or persecution, famine, peril, death or sword?
Not a thing can detach us from Jesus Christ our Lord.
Nay in all things we conquer through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Who shall keep us from the love of God? He spared not His own Son.
If we suffer we are heirs with Christ, the battle will be won.
We call him Abba, Father. We submit unto His will.
Not a thing can detach us, for He is with us still.
Nay in all things we conquer through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Who shall keep us from the love of God? What pow’r can stay His hand?
Our God will be for each of us. All things unveil as planned.
All things shall work together to them that love our Lord.
Not a thing can detach us, we’re planted in His sod.
Nay in all things we conquer, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
